Home Medicals
Home Medical Tuition at Woodbridge Park Education Service (WPES) ensures that students facing health-related challenges continue to have access to education, even when they are unable to attend school for medical reasons in accordance with Section 19 of the Education Act 1996.
A small team of Home Medical Tutors provides up to 5 hours of home tuition per week for students residing in Hounslow who are unable to attend school due to illness, accident, or medical conditions. Referrals for Home Medical Tuition must come from a Hospital Consultant and include a clear indication of how long the tuition will be required. The Home Medical Tutors work closely with the student’s home school to ensure continuity of education.
Referral Process for Home Medical Tuition
- Who Can Refer?
- Referrals for Home Medical Tuition may come directly from the hospital or the home school.
- Referrals must be accompanied by a supporting letter or statement from a medical consultant clearly requesting a period of home tuition, signed by the Consultant.
- The referral must state that the student is unable to attend school due to medical reasons and, if possible, specify the anticipated duration of the home tuition.
- Referral Received
Once the referral is received and processed, the home school will be contacted to gather background information, including the following:
- Identify a named contact person at the school for the tutors to liaise with.
- Set up a system for collecting and sending work from the home school to the tutor and student.
- Gather information on the student’s academic progress, levels, work to be covered, any exams the student is expected to take, and any safeguarding concerns.
- Initial Home Visit
An initial home visit will be arranged by the Outreach and Intervention Support Tutor, who will conduct a risk assessment to ensure the home environment is suitable for tuition. They will also complete the interview form and parent agreement, discuss the structure of the home tuition, and address any questions from parents, carers, or the student. The Outreach and Intervention Support Tutor will inform the front office of the date and time of the home visit for safeguarding purposes.
The days and times for tuition will be agreed upon with the tutor and the family.
- Registration
Students receiving Home Medical Tuition will remain on the roll of their home school. While the home school retains overall responsibility, the student will be dual registered on the WPES roll.
- Home Tuition
- A minimum of up to 5 hours of home tuition per week is offered, focusing on Maths, English, and Science.
- The Home Tutor will liaise with the school and provide regular updates on the student’s progress.
- The Home Tutor will keep records of the work covered and the progress made. They may also attend meetings as needed.
- End of Home Tuition
A review will be held at the end of the home tuition period to ensure a transition plan is in place for the student’s return to school.
